What are dental sealants?

Dental sealants are thin layers of usually plastic that are applied directly to the chewing surface of back molars. Their purpose is to act as a barrier between the tooth’s enamel and the bacteria that can cause tooth decay. The sealant protects the pits and fissures naturally present in molars’ biting surfaces, preventing cavities and other damage from decay.

Getting dental sealants applied is simple, quick, and completely painless. During the procedure, an etching solution is applied to the tooth surfaces. This helps the sealant stick to the surface of the tooth once the tooth has been washed and dried. The sealant is dried and cured using air or special light, and then the process is finished. Maintain your dental hygiene and continue to brush and floss as usual. You care for teeth with dental sealants just the same as other teeth.

Though dental sealants are designed to last for years, it is possible that they can become loose or dislodged. That’s why it’s important to attend regular cleanings and exams — Drs. Gordon and Brooks Green and Dr. Nichole Barnett will be able to tell right away that a sealant is missing. As an alternative, if you notice a sealant is missing, simply call and set up an appointment to get it replaced so you can continue to enjoy the benefits without interruption.

Do I need a fluoride treatment?

Fluoride is a natural and beneficial mineral that helps restore tooth enamel and protect against future decay. Though there is fluoride in most drinking water, nowadays, many people drink bottled water and lose out on fluoride’s benefits. That’s why, depending on your oral health and smile needs, we may recommend a fluoride treatment during your next appointment. Besides brushing and flossing, fluoride is the only method that helps prevent cavities and strengthen teeth between dental visits.

Fluoride treatment can come in several different forms. Typically we use a thin brushing coat that stays on your teeth.
